9/11 conspiracy theorist raises funds for university
Posted by: Admin

Education MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- A September 11 conspiracy theorist raised $8,427 for the University of Wisconsin to make up for money that local officials cut from one of its programs in a protest over a lecturer with similar views.
Cait Burgess, 35, of Fort Worth, Texas, said she donated the money to a scholarship fund for needy University of Wisconsin-Madison students.

The university came under heavy criticism during the summer for retaining Kevin Barrett as a part-time instructor for a fall course, "Islam: Religion and Culture." Barrett has said the U.S. government orchestrated the September 11 attacks.

In August, the Ozaukee County Board approved a resolution to cut UW Extension funds by $8,247, the amount that UW-Madison is paying Barrett. Ozaukee County, north of Milwaukee, does not fund the university itself, however it does contribute to the funding of UW Extension, which offers local education programs.

"I heard about the Kevin Barrett issue, and it upset me," said Burgess, who runs a Web design business. She said she thought the county's decision was "incredibly wrong."

About 100 people donated toward the fund and she gave thousands of dollars herself, she said.

Ozaukee County Supervisor Joe Sopko said Burgess and other critics of the board's action "have every right to exercise their freedom of speech."

School officials had reviewed Barrett's course plans and concluded he was qualified to teach. They said he could present his ideas during one week as long as students were allowed to challenge them.
