Pay dispute talks between check-in staff and baggage handlers and their employers at Stansted Airport have been adjourned until Monday. The talks are aimed at averting a two-day Bank Holiday strike.
At the talks, hosted by the conciliation service Acas, TGWU and GMB negotiators met representatives from Swissport, who are the ground-handling agents for airlines at Stansted.
The meeting followed an official strike ballot of 500 GMB members employed by Swissport who rejected a pay offer and voted by three-to-one for industrial action.
The GMB said it submitted a pay claim in April, including calls for a premium rate for Sunday working in addition to a "substantial" pay review.
The Union said on Friday that Swissport had not met the claim for Sunday premiums and the pay offer they had put on the table included "unacceptable" strings attached.
The workers provide ground-handling services, including check-in and baggage handling for about 80% of the passengers who use the airport, the union claims.
The strike is scheduled to begin at 5am on Saturday, August 26, until 8am the following day, and again from 5am on August Bank Holiday Monday until 8am the following day.
