Win would be half the story for these stars
Posted by: Admin

Sports AS with any major, the outcome of the British Open could provide a number of compelling stories. Here are a few potential winners who could create big headlines.
1. Darren Clarke: The Northern Irishman's wife Heather is gravely ill with cancer. Playing with that spectre, Clarke has continued to compete - and, in recent events, even threatened to win.

2. Tiger Woods: As he enters a new phase of his career after marriage and, more recently, the death of his father Earl, some have questioned whether the competitive fire still burns as brightly as in his early years.

3. Phil Mickelson: What demons remain after his calamitous US Open? Does not have a particularly good British Open record, so winning here a month after that trauma would prove he is an elite talent.

4. Adam Scott: Was overtaken by Geoff Ogilvy in the race to break the Australian majors drought. Back-to-back wins would underline the incredible depth of the Australian talent and propel Scott into the company of the game's best.

5. Colin Montgomerie: Having returned to form, Monty is now unequivocally the best player not to have won a major. Second-place finishes at last year's British Open and this year's US Open have only tantalised the temperamental Scot ever more.

6. Mark Hensby: Playing poorly and given very little chance. But it would be great to see him sitting next to Greg Norman at a reunion of past British Open champions.

7. Nick Dougherty: A talented local who has been sponsored by Nick Faldo. The only result that could get Liverpool's efforts in the football transfer market off the back pages of the Scouse newspapers.

8. John Daly: Hasn't been playing that well lately, particularly at his gig at the famous Cavern Club. But is a British Open champion and, whenever he wins, you know it won't be boring.

9. Jarrod Lyle: Just seven years after leaving a leukaemia ward at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital, the 24-year-old is playing his first major. Making the cut would be a great effort. But he is aiming for at least top 10.

10. Andrew Buckle: Last Australian in the tournament, taking the total number to 23, thanks to Trevor Immelman's withdrawal. Immelman withdrew, as his wife Carminita is due to give birth in Orlando, Florida, next week.
