   Carotid Artery Surgery Brings Higher Than Expected Risk

Health A procedure designed to clear blockages from the neck's carotid arteries appears to be riskier in real life than it seemed in clinical trails, researchers report.

The procedure, called carotid endarterectomy, "is the most common surgery performed to prevent stroke," noted study author Dr. Seemant Chaturvedi, a professor of neurology and director of the Wayne State University Stroke Program in Detroit.

Health Most people inherit a version of a gene that optimizes their brain’s thinking circuitry, yet also appears to increase risk for schizophrenia*, a severe mental illness marked by impaired thinking, scientists at the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) have discovered. The seeming paradox emerged from the first study to explore the effects of variation in the human gene for a brain master switch, DARPP-32.

   FDA OKs 1st Over-the-Counter Weight-Loss Drug

Health The drug, called alli (orlistat), is designed to be used only in tandem with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet by overweight adults aged 18 and older. According to manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline, the drug helps people lose 50 percent more weight than dieting alone, should cost consumers $12 to $25 a week, and is expected to be available by this summer.
