DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- The Detroit Public Schools will hold a half-day of classes Tuesday, the first scheduled day of the academic year since teachers went on strike Aug. 28.
All staff members were expected to report to the district's 225 schools Tuesday and work for a full day, Superintendent William F. Coleman III said in a statement released Sunday night. Students, however, will be dismissed three hours after classes begin.
A message seeking comment from the Detroit Federation of Teachers was left Sunday night at union headquarters.
Bargainers for the 130,000-student school district and the 9,500-member teacher's union were conducting contract negotiations on orders from Wayne County Circuit Judge Susan Borman.
Lawyers for the district argued that the strike is illegal and state law required Borman to order the teachers to return to the classroom. The judge instead ordered around-the-clock talks and called for both sides to return to her courtroom at 11 a.m. Tuesday if a deal wasn't reached by then.
The district says it needs $105 million in concessions from its unions, including $88 million from teachers, to balance its budget.
