Bike bomb kills 4 Canadian troops
Posted by: Admin

World KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A suicide bomber on a bicycle detonated near NATO troops in southern Afghanistan Monday morning as they handed out gifts to children, killing four Canadian soldiers and wounding dozens of others, including civilians, according to the Canadian military and NATO.
In a separate incident, a bomb exploded on the outskirts of Kabul Monday, killing at least one Afghan police officer, U.N. sources said.

The Canadian soldiers -- part of NATO's International Security Assistance Forces -- were patrolling the Panjwayi District of Kandahar Province when the attack took place at 9:30 a.m. local time, according to ISAF.

Initial reports indicated the bomb was an improvised explosive device, but ISAF later confirmed it was a suicide bomber.

Canada's Expeditionary Forces Command confirmed four Canadian soldiers were killed and other soldiers were wounded.

NATO forces are in southern Afghanistan as part of Operation Medusa, which is meant to quell a Taliban-led insurgency in the region. The operation is being spearheaded by Canadian and Afghan troops.

It was unclear what type of device caused the explosion, which happened around 6:15 p.m. (9:45 a.m. ET) on Jalalabad Road near the customs department -- a site of frequent bomb attacks in the Afghan capital.
